Hi there Soulies. My vacation is over…
As sad as I am for it to be over, I’m happy I made it back in one piece although with infinitely more red on my skin than I started with. And with a lot more insight about what to expect when going on vacation, especially when traveling some distance away and with kids.
#1: The sun in Texas is HOT.
Of course I know the summer sun can be hot but despite this knowledge, I was not prepared for the sheer intensity of the Texas sun. It’s so much more, well, intense, than the sun here in NW Arkansas and if you forget to reapply sunscreen often (🙋guilty), expect a not so nice redness fanning across your skin. Especially if you sit or stand in the sun waiting in line for rides or shows.
#2: Vacation eating is waay more expensive with kids.
The hubs and I had planned and saved for several months for this vacation-hotel, souvineers, gas, food, etc. Our pan was to buy groceries so we wouldn’t eat out much. And we did cook but not nearly as we had planned. It seems that kids get hungry and thirsty far more often when on vacation than when at home. I never knew this. But I do now.
#3: Don’t plan something to do every day.
#4: One day off after returning from vacation is not enough.
Especially if you drive straight through. (We did 12 hours 😝). We were so exhausted when we got home that it carried over into our last day of vacation (a.k.a recovery day). Let’s just say there was not nearly enough sleep.
And last but not least,
#5: It is totally worth it! We may have spent more money than we intended, I may be sunburnt, and we may be exhausted for the next several days, but we had a great time and made some wonderful memories that we will cherish for the rest of our lives.
