Well, I just flew back home from the RWA National Convention in New York City, and boy are my arms tired.
Wakka, wakka, wakka…
But seriously, it was a truly wonderful time and also good for my writing career.
I think attending the national conference is something every serious romance author should consider. It’s a great place to meet and network with industry professionals, and interact with people that for the most part you only see online.
And I met lots of Soul Mate authors there as well.
A group of Soulies met for drinks one night, and I also found Soulies at author signing events, the elegant Rita Awards ceremony, and at parties. Yes, that’s me dressed as Dr. Strange for the FF&P (RWA’s Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal branch) Gathering party.
But it’s not just fun and parties. There are also forums, seminars, and other learning experiences for authors at every stage of their careers. This year I was honored to be asked to speak on a panel of male romance authors about the male point of view.
There was also an opportunity to have a professional photo taken and retouched for web sites and social media, and you can bet I took advantage of that. This old man needs all the help he can get.
Yes, the cost of tickets, travel, and hotel is expensive, and it certainly has to fit into your budget, but the benefits of attending the RWA National Conference can also be substantial. It’s something every serious romance author should consider.
Hopefully, I’ll see you next year in San Francisco. Just look for the old guy with the blue hair. (Though by next year…it might be purple.)
