Gift A Memory

The idea emerged eight years ago, after our teenage sons asked for gift ideas in December. They’d begun to work odd jobs and were proud of their earnings. My husband, my mom (Grandma Hi), and I, received chocolates from them on Mother’s and Father’s Day. I rarely turn down the prospect of chocolate, but I sensed a different tact was in order. The old storyteller from Mystery Lodge at Knott’s Berry Farm came to mind. In the magical show, he passed memories from deep within his ancestral history in a manner that enthralled us all. I suggested my sons pen a favorite memory for a Christmas gift and they complied-specific to my husband, my mom, and me. Mom passed away the following June, and had mentioned often how she loved reading their cherished gift describing time spent together.

So, don’t wait. Write memories and watch for smiles when you deliver your priceless treasure. Now we sometimes request in advance that our friends and family share a memory at holidays, birthdays, and recently at a memorial for a childhood friend of our sons. Think about the possibilities during this time of giving thanks. I’m blessed to have my simple sheets of paper, richly filled by loving thoughts. Here’s excerpts from mine and I hope you’ll share yours:

From Mark: “One of my favorite memories was when I first drove on a street. I believe it was after we dealt with the DMV to get my permit. I wasn’t expecting it at all, but you basically just tossed me the keys and said drive. We made it home safely eventually.

From Neil: …I also really enjoyed dressing up as pirates for the 4th of July, I think you are probably the only mom that I know of that would do that and have a blast (because deep down we both know you think you’re a cowboy pirate). There are so many fond memories that I have of you I could write a book, but writing books is your job. Thanks for being the coolest mom a guy could ask for.

Pictures are wonderful, perspective adds the final touch. Happy trails, Sally
