Holidays 2020 – how will yours change?

As this last month of 2020 limps to a close, it is a great time to reflect on this strange, crazy year. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined this time last year the events of 2020. If someone from the future had come to me and said that I would basically be homebound from March onward I would have told them that was ridiculous.

Yet here we are.

I am fortunate in many regards. My company has so far been surviving these trying times—and I like my own company. Many of my co-workers have far bigger challenges, from child care to cramped quarters to inconsistent Internet. Yet we are all here. Some have tested positive for Covid-19 and one was very sick for several weeks, but we are quite fortunate that none have died. I know many others who are not so lucky.

My habits have changed in interesting ways. Last blog I mentioned I’d found a passion for puzzles and that’s been expanded to puzzle books. It’s amazing what you can find on ebay. I’m especially fond of Flower Power and Stretch Letters, in addition to crosswords and Sudoku. Surprisingly, my TV consumption isn’t that different, although I do find it hard to stay focused on anything too traumatic. Hallmark movies and baking shows for me, please!

As for the holidays—wow, what a dilemma. I had set plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas, both of which fell by the wayside. I am hoping next year I will be able to return to those plans without risk and without fear but this year was too fraught for me. It’s me, myself and I in my household and if I were to fall sick it would be very difficult to function. I have dear friends for that I look forward to at least seeing at Christmas, even if our lives diverge during the year, a pleasure I am foregoing this year. I hope next year is better.

This year I will find a good recipe and treat myself to something interesting for Christmas dinner. I’d love to hear of any good recipes others have that will make the holidays a little brighter (no green bean casserole, though, can’t stand the onions).

I hope you are all healthy and staying safe out there.

As a reminder, my third Universe Chronicles series book is called Storming Time. Here’s a blurb and a buy link—just in case!

Storming Time blurb:

A fast car, a little weather manipulation to cover his tracks, and Zared Hersh’s emergency extraction job is done. But when Hannah Nickels dives into his front seat, something about her aquamarine eyes strikes him like lightning.

Hannah’s been groomed to join Universe from the moment her time-freezing talent emerged. But recently, her power’s been glitchy.

In the relative safety of Universe HQ in Richmond, their relationship grows. But Hannah has a second, more dangerous power. And as her control slips, someone with a hidden agenda sets her up to fall—straight into Whisper’s trap.

I wish you a happy holiday and some good reading and puzzling. I’m concentrating on jigsaw puzzles and whatever else comes to hand. Of course reading and some TV. Here is a recipe for carrot soufflé that my housemate gave me and she brought some with her when she and her partner drove down from Reno. I thought it was delicious. Carrot Souffle
    Makes 8 servings
    1-1/2 pounds carrots, sliced

    3/4 cup butter or margarine
    3 large eggs
    1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    Salt

    1 -/2 cups sugar
    1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 1-1/2-quart souffle dish.
Cook carrots in boiling water for 15 minutes, or until tender. Drain. In food processor, combine carrots with other ingredients and process until smooth, stopping once to scrape down the sides.
Spoon into prepared dish. Bake for about 1 hour, or until set and lightly browned. Serve immediately.[games

  2. I’ll be happy to see 2020 in my rearview mirror! We have the same cover photos! Vengeance (Tip of the Spear series Book 2) LOL!

  3. Like so many, I cant wait til this year is over. Maybe then we can meet up once again at a book conference or two.

I also can’t wait to end this year, but I am counting my blessings. My husband and I–so far–are well. We, too, ate in a restaurant this Christmas–avoiding our loved ones for their safety and our own. We don’t have children, so we often do this. However, many of our traditional celebrations are not possible now. Hopefully, 2021 will slowly get better.
