I am a victim of gluttony. My Yorkie boy, Eli, is also a victim of gluttony. Because of the images the very word provokes, I pulled out my trusty synonym finder. The following didn’t make me feel any better: greedy-gut, pig, hog, gobbler, bellyful, etc. I did stumble on one synonym that I’ve decided best describes my eating habits during the holidays…insatiable. There now, that wasn’t so bad…a heck of a lot better than belly-slave and some of the others.
I’m not insatiable over vegetables, breads, chips, meat, potatoes, gravy, or anything nutritionists deem good for you. I am insatiable over sweets. I’ll pass up a steak for a candy bar. Cookies for breakfast, more for lunch, and cake or pie for supper is okay by me. Throw in a snack of M&M’s and I’m a happy camper. I’m often asked, “Don’t you get sick eating so much sugar?” And I proudly answer, “Nope.”
I do fairly good keeping my insatiable sweet eating in check throughout the year. UNTIL…Christmas. I start the month of December planning my gluttony. First I make peanut butter fudge. Oh my gosh, just typing the words makes my mouth water. Then comes divinity which never turns out. But I’m determined and each year I make a batch and either eat it with a spoon or toss the lump out. Then I whip up Christmas sugar cookies. Yum! How about peanut brittle? That’s my husband’s favorite. I always make my famous No Bake Fruitcake. Not Sorry all you fruitcake haters. I love it even though I have a button stating: Get Even, Give Fruitcake. Not all of my gluttony is homemade. I support Russell Stover, SEES, Godiva, Fanny Farmer, Hershey, etc.
My Yorkie Boy, Eli is what the vet calls a ‘Finisher’. He eats his food, then finishes his little brother’s, and anything our Husky leaves. After all that, he begs for whatever my husband or I am eating. My dieting whine is nothing compared to his pitiful whimpering when restricted to only his plate of food.
As I watch the scales climb, there is one consoling thought that I grab and hang onto throughout this voraciousness (another synonym). January is coming. Yep, good ole January and the start of my yearly diet where I dangle thoughts of swimsuits in my mind’s eye. Shorts and sundresses are a light at the end of the starvation tunnel. Eli and I will succeed. He’ll lose his three extra pounds and I’ll lose my twenty.
There is much more I’d like to share with you regarding this cupidinous (not kidding…another synonym) malady, but my cinnamon rolls are ready to come out of the oven and be iced. Hot, sweet, gooey, nut and raisin filled, cinnamon rolls. Oh Yea! So I’ll just say Merry Christmas to all and to all pumpkin or pecan pie.
No Bake Fruit Cake
2 lb. package honey graham crackers, 1 lb mixed diced candied fruits (I usually add more candied cherries or pineapple), 8 oz package chopped dates, 1 1/2 cups light seedless raisins, 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp nutmeg, 1/2 tsp ground cloves, 14 oz can of evaporated milk, 1/3 cup water.
Crush graham crackers to fine crumbs. (I haven’t been able to find boxes of graham cracker crumbs this year. Maybe you’ll have better luck.) In a large bowl thoroughly mix all ingredients. Gradually add milk and water, mixing and kneading until all the crumbs are moistened. Line a tube pan or 2 bread pans with waxed paper. Refrigerate and let age for a few days before digging in. This isn’t a pretty fruit cake and hard to believe, but I’ve run across those who don’t like it. Maybe its an acquired taste. A slice of this and a cup of coffee hooo boy. You can freeze this fruitcake and enjoy it come summer. Such a treat!
