Walking in a Winter Wonderland

We got hit by a pretty big snowstorm yesterday here in Oregon. It’s nothing like the blizzards out in the Midwest or New England, but four inches is a lot for our area. It was right on the edge of freezing for most of the day, so the snow was coming down in huge fluffy flakes, perfect for catching on the tongue.

After a mad scramble to locate all our snow gear (which honestly only gets pulled out a couple of times a year in our part of the Pacific Northwest) I took a walk down to the local park. I enjoy tromping through the snow while it is still fresh.

There is something very magical about the first snowfall of the year, when it is soft and white and enough of a novelty that everyone comes out to play in it. The trees and bushes take on new shapes, and fields seem to stretch on forever. Even the sound of fresh snow is different, crunch-squeaking under my boots.

My kids built snow sculptures with other kids in the neighborhood, and then we all came inside for hot chocolate–the perfect snow day treat. Have you gotten any snow yet this year where you are? Do you have any favorite winter traditions or snowy memories?

  1. Here in Ashland we’ve already reached 8+ inches of snow. As long as I don’t have to go anywhere requiring a car, I love it! Beautiful. Peaceful. Amazing.

I’m jealous! We are in a heat wave in New Orleans!

Snow expected here in Las Vegas valley. This is high desert so it gets pretty cold in winter, but when it snows it doesn’t stick around for long.

  4. My kids used to build snow forts after the plows went by and left behind big mounds. One year they crafted a Pokemon figure, Diglet! Now my husband and I use the snowblower! But we still love to go cross country skiing in the NYC streets before the plows come out. I just love to watch it come down. Always improves my mood.

Here in Los Angeles we are getting some much-needed rain. But I was born in Buffalo New York, and we didn’t make snowman. We made snow horses and rode them. Happy holidays.
