The value of resting and recharging

I hope everyone who celebrates Christmas had a lovely time with friends and family yesterday. I’m actually taking this week off, and giving myself a real break from all my usual writing and responsibilities, which means this post was scheduled ahead of time.

While “write every day” is a common adage, especially as advice for new writers, I find that it is equally important for me to take deliberate breaks to recharge. Writing is a creative business, and it is important to have down time to give my subconscious time to chew on things, and for new ideas to surface. Novel experiences and engaging with other people’s stories, whether written or on the screen, really help refill my creative well, so I’m hoping to spend the next week relaxing, hiking, maybe catching a movie or two and reading, reading, reading!

I have been reading a lot this year, as well as getting back into traveling a little bit. I’ve never been much of one for New Year resolutions but I do set a reading goal on Goodreads every year. I plan stretch myself to a goal of a hundred books for 2023 since I blew past that for 2022. It has also been a very strange few years and I’ve been traveling between the pages of a book more than ever. I hope to travel in real life more in 2023, and maybe do a few more in-person reader events.

As the year draws to a close, I hope you are doing things that refresh your spirit and engage your creativity. What is your favorite way to give yourself a break–whether big or small?

Jaycee Jarvis has been an avid romance reader since devouring all the Sweet Dreams books her middle school library had to offer. Also a fantasy fan from an early age, she often wished those wondrous stories had just a bit more kissing. Now she writes stories with a romantic heart set against a magical backdrop, creating the kind of book she most likes to read.

When not lost in worlds of her own creation, she resides in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, three children and a menagerie of pets.

Jaycee is a Golden Heart® finalist and author of the Hands of Destin series. The award winning first book in that series, Taxing Courtship, released in June 2018. The final book in that series, Crowning Courtship, came out in May 2021.

I’m so glad you’re taking a break. I am doing the same thing. I am in my old hometown of Kailua, Hawaii and enjoying just being here. My son and his crew did not make it. They are still marooned in Detroit but I’m hoping they’ll be in tomorrow. They spent the last three days in a hotel. Happy 2023 to all.

I also am taking time to read and recharge my batteries. We are spending time with friends, going to see holiday light displays, and enjoying the season.
